These last few years have been exciting. I have spent them working with a team to create an alternative to the subjective, perception-based employee evaluation strategies we have experienced. Instead of building a better evaluation strategy, we chose a different approach--enables employees to identify, create, measure, and communicate their own value.
Here's what it means for an individual, like me:
I'm not subject any longer to being only judged by the perception of my manager, my job, and my peers.
My manager and I agree on what value looks like. There are no surprises. There are no guesses about expectations.
I can differentiate myself from others using objective metrics. There is no top-end to the value I can get recognized for.
I'm able to retain my record of my objective value in the app to use for promotions, new jobs, and to enjoy pleasant memories of past successes at any time.
Here's what it means for a leader:
I'm no longer dependent on seeing an employee work. I measure their success by the production of measurable results that we agree represent value.
My employees think more like businesspeople. They know what value looks like and how they connect the production of organizational value.
Performance evaluation is easier. Instead of justifying my perception of their value, employees report the metrics that objectively show their value.
